WPÜ SHINJUKU presents an evening screening of SHAPELESS and MONDAI, two works by Tokyo-based filmmaker Ameya Sora.
Created in Tokyo, the films explore the emotional and social landscape of young adulthood through questions of love, queerness, identity, family, womanhood, and belonging.
MONDAI follows young women navigating relationships and identity in contemporary Tokyo, examining the particular contradictions of growing up between cultures and expectations.
SHAPELESS is a more personal and experimental work about the difficulty of loving and being loved as a young person, particularly as expectations surrounding relationships, marriage, sexuality, and adulthood begin to take shape. Moving between narrative, documentary, animation, and family archive, the film asks what happens when neither love nor identity fits neatly into the forms we inherit.
Presented together, SHAPELESS and MONDAI form a conversation about what it means to become an adult in contemporary Tokyo while trying to construct a life, identity, and language for oneself.
The evening will include screenings of both films followed by a conversation with director Ameya Sora.
Tokyo-based director working across narrative film, documentary, music videos, photography, and experimental media. Exploring themes of identity, intimacy, culture, and the ways in which people construct a sense of belonging.
Working across Japan and internationally, with collaborations spanning artists including Drake, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Raveena, and Arlo Parks, as well as brands and platforms such as Nike, Google, and NOWNESS. Work has been screened and recognized at international film festivals, with the recent short film SHAPELESS selected for the Academy Award-qualifying Tasveer Film Festival.
Recently completed a master’s degree in the Interactive Media Arts program at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.
