WPÜ SHINJUKU is a platform where travelers, creators, artists, and locals converge. Through a diverse range of programs including exhibitions, workshops, talks, and Room 303 Radio, curiosity and conversation spark new connections. It's a space where hospitality, culture, and community come together, and collaboration happens naturally.
The WPÜ AIR program invites artists from around the world who are engaged in creation, research, and the development of new work. Residents have access to studio space, opportunities to connect with other creatives, and support for sharing their work across social media and press. The final week of the residency culminates in the AIR Showcase, an opportunity to present what emerged during your stay in whatever form feels right: exhibition, performance, talk, or beyond.
Built around the world's busiest train station, Shinjuku is a city of stark contrasts. One of Japan's largest entertainment districts, Showa-era alley bars, government offices including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, and quiet residential neighborhoods, all coexisting side by side. Independent galleries, bookshops, live music venues, and cafés are woven into the fabric of everyday life, while the area sits at the center of Tokyo's transit network. A place of density and diversity, full of discovery and inspiration.
This track is for artists running a single public program in the lounge space. The format is open, whether it's a workshop, talk, live painting, performance, screening or another public program, as long as it invites interaction with visitors.Your program structure should be finalized before you arrive. On-site adjustments are fine, but the concept should be set in advance.
A two-week residency combining studio time with public programming. The first week is dedicated to developing and refining your project; the second week involves hosting two public programs such as workshops, talks, screenings, or similar.Formats follow the same spirit as Short Stay, but with the added dimension of an on-site creative process.
A full month to develop, make, and present your work. The entire residency is dedicated to production, with the aim of delivering a substantial output including an exhibition, performance, screening, installation, or equivalent presentation in WPÜ GALLERY.
