Exclusive Art Club, a new project by contemporary artist Masahide Matsuda, a leading figure in Japan’s post-art movement, unfolds through the format of a members-only party. At a time when the role of art is shifting from the exhibition of objects toward social gatherings and networking, Matsuda intentionally steps away from the act of making artworks, instead repositioning his practice around the situations in which people connect. In this shift, he identifies a distinctly contemporary form of artistic expression.
For its inaugural edition, the project presents a collaboration with ALMOSTBLACK, a fashion brand that has consistently explored clothing as a medium of expression rather than mere fashion. Known for its cross-disciplinary collaborations with figures such as calligrapher Yuichi Inoue, painter and sculptor Izumi Kato, and musician KREVA, ALMOSTBLACK will release exclusive, limited-edition items created specifically for this occasion.
The event will take place as both a Christmas Party and a Year-End Party, marking the launch of the project in a celebratory setting.
Release Party:
Monday, December 22, 19:00–22:00
Admission:
Free (drinks available for purchase)
Please note that the exhibition itself will open from December 23 onward.
A post-artist who lightly yet incisively examines the relationship between technology and life. Through poetic and conceptual interventions, they open up new territories of expression within contemporary society. In recent years, their practice has focused on the disruptive reuse of collective languages and symbols embedded in contemporary culture. Through this method—referred to as “Techno-Imagination”—they encourage viewers to reconstruct perception and thought, destabilizing established ways of seeing and interpreting the world.
A fashion brand that re-edits aesthetics and functionality in clothing by traversing the structures of military and dresswear, rooted in a philosophy derived from the traditional Japanese color “Kachiiro” (deep indigo-brown). Guided by designer Shunta Nakajima’s distinctive aesthetic sensibility, the brand collages art, craft, and both renowned and anonymous forms of beauty to develop collections with a uniquely defined identity. Founded in 2015, the brand presented its first runway show in 2023 and will launch a new project line, “GHOST ALMOST BLACK,” beginning in 2025.
